Review of "You Are Here" by Chris Chantler Litmus - You Are Here Having supported every branch of the Hawkwind family tree over the last few years while quietly issuing demo tapes of impressive and refreshing quality, unreconstructed space rockers Litmus nail their style with joyous aplomb on their debut CD. Embracing the aesthetic stereotypes of '70s space rock with affection and knowing humour (the cover is a picture of the Orion Nebula, and songs have names like 'Infinity Drive', 'Dreams of Space' and '(Theta Wave) Inductor'), Litmus mash up the usual Hawkwind mix of juddering astro punk, head swirling psychedelia and breathless prog chops, but never get lost in a landslide of lysergic indulgence. The songs are tight, disciplined and infectiously good, while twenty-minute closer 'Stone Oscillator (Static Ritual)' is a heavy Mogodon sprawl crashing '70s Bowie into '90s Electric Wizard. This is thoroughly enjoyable fractal display head music for those still in search of space. [8/10] |
